Welcome!

This site is a graphic design portfolio for Victoria Meldrum. My work is organized by project and searchable by client. Most thumbnail images link to the full PDF piece, hosted by Calameo.

The majority of my work was created in-house at the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) at Ball State University; however, I occasionally volunteer my services to nonprofit organizations and community projects.

Big Blue Wet Thing

My friend Dan is a very creative and ambitious individual who is always working on something.  For a fun, little, summer project, he took it upon himself to orchestrate a chorus of 30 voices across three continents to sing Muppet Treasure Island.  Dan asked me to create album artwork that got the point across that this was about muppets and also pirates.  Done and done.

You can download the music for free on any of these three sites: http://bigbluewetthing.bandcamp.com/ | http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?j43c2g6nnigmul2 | http://soundcloud.com/strange-battery/sets/big-blue-wet-thing/

Almost Paradise Pottery Studio

Almost Paradise Pottery Studio is a small ceramics shop specializing in custom food and water bowls for dogs and cats.  Because I was friends with the artist/founder, I was very happy to assist her in establishing her corporate identity.  Inspired by Bailey, a charming springer spaniel, I created a logo that communicated the “for pets” message and felt homemade.

I am featuring the logo and wordmark I created, though the size constraints of the shop’s website required something a little different.

2012 Manufacturing and Logistics Report

Produced for Conexus Indiana, the 2012 Manufacturing and Logistics Report grades each state’s performance in several factors affecting the health of the manufacturing industry.  The website offers a look at each state’s performance over the history of this project.

Because the Community Asset website worked so well, we wanted the Manufacturing and Logistics Report to have a similar website under our CBER Data Center umbrella.  The print reports remained largely the same as they have for the past few years, but the whole look was a little more cohesive.

Research + Outreach: Ball State CBER 2007-2012

The Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University experienced a makeover in 2007.  A new director and a new mission reshaped the center into an office focused on current issues in business, government, and economy.  The center collaborated with other talents on campus, especially the office of Building Better Communities, an initiative to improve Indiana’s communities, which resulted in projects like the Indiana Community Asset Inventory and Rankings.

CBER wanted a printed piece to showcase its growth over the last five years, sort of a cross between an annual report and a promotional publication.  I stuck closely to the Ball State brand and created a strong visual hierarchy with plenty of white space to really highlight the work (as shown in cover images) and the concepts (as displayed in the headings).  The result is a publication that is easy to flip through, but has an engaging design that emphasizes the breadth of our work.

Community Assets 2012

The Indiana Community Asset Inventory and Rankings offers a detailed look at the factors that affect the reputation of Indiana’s communities, both large and small.  The purpose of this project is to provide policy makers and residents within Indiana’s counties with an objective, data-focused assessment of the factors that influence the quality of life and the economic conditions within each county.

This project required a printed report for easy distribution, but the real focus was on the website (asset.cberdata.org).  Past sites that included rollover maps required the use of Adobe Flash, but the overwhelming amount of data and desire for simple, database-driven updates made us consider our options.  Graham, our web developer, found a solution with SVG format graphics.  The resulting website was faster to load, far less glitchy, and implemented database updates automatically.

My web layout focused on the ease of navigation and the multiple ways a user might try to view the data.  I also kept in mind that this project would likely set the tone for the rest of the CBER Data Center, a collection of web-based tools and projects produced by the center.  The print report reflected the look of the website while trying to display multiple data sets in an orderly fashion.

Right-to-Work Legislation and the Manufacturing Sector

This study extends the analysis of the impact of right-to-work legislation in very narrow areas—industrial composition, manufacturing income, employment and wages in the United States.

This high-profile study called for a Ball State style treatment and was used to create a new template for CBER brief publications.  The sidebar was my own mini-project, and I conducted my own research for it.

Property Tax Levy Caps in New Jersey

This study analyzes the effects on the New Jersey economy of the 2.0 percent cap on property tax levy growth that became effective in January 2011, using a regional computable general equilibrium (CGE) model.  This study was produced for the New Jersey Association of REALTORS© Governmental Research Foundation.

The head of publications and I worked together to come up with a theme for a series of New Jersey reports.  This report was my piece.  We used the same typefaces and style elements, but applied them to create an individual look for each subject.  Orange is usually an off-limits color, but I think it worked well to make this piece really stand out on a shelf.

Muncie Music Fest 2011

Muncie Music Fest is an all-ages event in downtown Muncie, Indiana.  It features live music performances on outdoor stages and in several indoor venues.  The 2011 event continues the microphone theme but with a cool rock update that is accessible to many types of people (we feature original music from many genres).  The 2011 event presence needed to be especially strong because the annual event was not held in 2010.

Notes: The binder cover leaves room for committee members to type/write what the binder contains (sponsor info, volunteer info, etc.).  The “proudly supports” poster is designed to have the sponsor logo printed in the first half and displayed at the place of business as a marketing tool.

2011 Manufacturing and Logistics Report

Produced for Conexus Indiana, the 2011 Manufacturing and Logistics Report grades each of the 50 states in several areas of the economy that underlie the success of manufacturing and logistics.  This report always generates a lot of media attention because it calls out each state on its industrial climate.  The look is simple, fresh, and direct so a very diverse audience can understand the report.

U.S. Export Adaptability at the State Level

Produced by Ball State University’s Center for Business and Economic Research, the economic report examines how each state in the United States of America fares in the global market.  The report offered chances to make a lot of interesting, colorful graphics and generated quite a bit of press. I worked closely with the research economist in order to make sure the graphics clearly showed what the somewhat complicated data story told. The biggest challenge was thinking of how to visually display “export adaptability”—just try searching for that on Flickr.  I did a little research to understand what export adaptability entails and concluded that transportation and shipping represented a lot of the import/export concept.  Once I understood the topic, things just fell into place.
