After seeing the vertical column-style banners that CBER had made for its open house event in 2009, Miller College of Business expressed a wish to have similar banners for use at its various events, both within the Whitinger Business Building and at other locations on and off campus.
The column banners are made of cloth-backed vinyl that is durable enough to retract and wind into an aluminum base. The top of the banner is attached to an aluminum beam with a hole for a vertical spine to be inserted. Set up for the banners is surprisingly simple and takes just a few minutes.
CBER uses its two banners by doorways as signage and flanking the stage as decoration at events, as well as background decoration for the occasional TV interview. Applying our experiences, we knew that the most eye-catching elements needed to appear at shoulder height, both while standing and sitting next to the banner. We also knew that depending on who was doing the set up, the height of the banner could be a little unwieldy (33 in wide x 80 in high). Usually a couple sizes are available. I highly recommend these—look online for vendors who offer retractable, cloth-backed vinyl (possibly “oilcloth”) banners with metal frames. Good vendors should be willing to send you a swatch of the “fabric” before you place your final order.
