The Department of Accounting holds an annual dinner and awards program to outstanding alumni and department friends. This event required various invitations, reminders, and signage that convey a level of sophistication and prestige. All materials were printed using the university printer.
Welcome!
This site is a graphic design portfolio for Victoria Meldrum. My work is organized by project and searchable by client. Most thumbnail images link to the full PDF piece, hosted by Calameo.
The majority of my work was created in-house at the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) at Ball State University; however, I occasionally volunteer my services to nonprofit organizations and community projects.

Prague Center
Ball State University encourages students to see the world through study abroad programs, including full-semester experiences taught by Ball State faculty at centers in London, Sydney, and other international cities. In 2009, the Miller College of Business lead the way to open Prague Center in the Czech Republic. Because it was a brand new program, Prague Center needed branding and tons of information. I adapted the Ball State style and researched what the university currently offered in the way of study abroad materials.
This post includes materials from both the 2009 – 2010 and 2010 – 2011 campaigns.

Valentine’s Day 2011
To celebrate my second Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend, Kris, I continued the tradition of making a home-cooked meal for us to share at my apartment/restaurant. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. I think I succeeded.

Undergraduate Fellow 2011
The Miller College of Business undergraduate fellowship gives one student the chance to represent the college and its students while receiving full-time, in-state tuition and on-campus employment. This prestigious position needed a classy look to attract the right kind of candidate. Tabloid-sized posters were displayed around the college on bulletin boards and in the classrooms.

Indiana Economic Outlook 2011
The Indiana Economic Outlook 2011 luncheon is an annual event put on by Ball State University’s Center for Business and Economic Research. The event includes a lunch and several economic presentations concerning current economic/business issues and predictions for the business climate in the upcoming year. The keynote speaker for the event is generally someone involved with the state government—this year’s speaker being Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman. Obviously, event materials need to be very polished and serious because of the professional business audience.

Executive-in-Residence Carl Chapman
The Executive-in-Residence program put on by the Miller College of Business allows business executives to share their career experiences with business students during a longer stay at Ball State. This program is a pride point for the dean of the college, who often sends promotional materials for the E-i-R visits to fellow business school deans. The look must be classy enough for distribution across the nation, yet be fresh enough to appeal to students.
A basic template was established so materials could be quickly produced in case of a time crunch. The graphic for the poster is also used as the feature graphic for an email sent to students reminding them of the event, either a day before or day of.

Full Circle Arts Co-op
Full Circle Arts Co-op is a local organization striving to bring arts to the community through classes, events, and space for projects. The old logo had red and black swooshes around the organization’s name and looked vaguely like a record or eye. In my version, I used red and black in keeping with the members’ love of anarchy, and brought a little more dynamic interaction to the circle theme. The result is clean, crisp, and appropriate for signage, screen-printed t-shirts, etc.

Huntington Bicycle Challenge
The Huntington Bicycle Challenge is an annual bicycle event in Huntington County, Indiana. The event includes a challenging two-day, on-/off-road cycling competition (sanctioned by USA Cycling), an on-road business teams competition, and several tour options for one or two days. The first event was held in 2004. By 2006, the event proved to be a success and needed a web presence to inform a growing audience. Eager to use my newly acquired web design skills, I took the initiative to create a website and generated most of the content myself.
During my years as the event’s web designer, I made about four versions of the website (the first one used – gasp – tables). The most recent version definitely has the most well developed concept and an edgier look based on roadways; this was to attract the competitive racers versus the community-friendly tour riders. I consulted a web developer to make sure the CSS was written properly and compatible with most browsers.
In 2011, the Huntington Bicycle Challenge parted ways with its main organizing group, and I decided to part ways as well. This was an extremely educational experience for me, especially because it was with my first serious client. The sky was the limit—I could go as far as my skill and creativity would take me, and I definitely experimented through this site. If I were to do this project differently, I would look into content management systems so the event organizers could update the information as needed instead of needing to go through me for every change. A learning experience, indeed.
Note: Because the public website no longer exists, the images link to a site mirror that I host.

Media in the Workplace
The economic study Media in the Workplace was the result of an intense data collection project by Ball State’s Center for Media Design. CBER researchers then analyzed the data and drew conclusions, which were then used to assess the implications of being exposed to various media while at work. The hope is that this study will trigger more research into the ever-changing work environment and promote conversations about how to better use communication technologies.
This study contained many challenges for the CBER design team. Not only was the data confusing (some aspects very broad and others very specific) but also the sheer amount of “stuff” was overwhelming. The design and research teams worked together over several months to make sure each figure communicated the results clearly and the text was understandable and accurate. I established a palette of 11+ colors, redesigned figures, and arranged the pages—working from a bare bones version created by the publications/web supervisor. She was the pioneer; I was the clean-up crew.
