Impact Study: Pakistani Flood Events

The economic disaster study “Preliminary Damage Estimates for Pakistani Flood Events, 2010” was written by Michael J. Hicks (economist, Ball State University) and Mark L. Burton (economist, University of Tennessee).  The intention of the report was to inform the U.S. military of what to expect in aiding Pakistan in the aftermath of the floods.  The report was produced in about a week and was the No. 1 priority for the staff of the Center for Business and Economic Research because of the immediate need.  The report resulted in our entire staff receiving thanks from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“Ball State University Center for Business and Economic Research is commended for its exceptional efforts in producing a Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) for the flood damage in Pakistan on 13-15 August 2010.  The center’s extraordinary efforts resulted in this ROM being available two days ahead of schedule.  This report is being seen at the highest levels of the military and state department and may have international level impact.  Your team’s collective efforts reflect great effort on the team, Ball State University and the United States of America.”
—Joseph A. Goetz, Colonel, Engineer, Acting Commander

I think it is simply amazing that some of the work we do at CBER has such a large impact in the real world.  I am so proud of us!

Advanced Professionalism Certificate

The Advanced Professionalism Certificate program encourages business students to attend specific professionalism and personal development events put on by the college, the university, and the Career Center.  In return, students receive special denotation on their university transcripts announcing their certification.  Events that are available for APC credit are marked with an easily identifiable logo.  The logo has been modified slightly since its introduction in 2007.  This most recent version features simplified typography for better legibility at small sizes.

Festival on the Green 2010

Festival on the Green is a family-friendly outdoor event featuring the arts, children’s activities, a car show, and more.  The feature attraction is the Muncie Symphony Orchestra’s free concert.  Because the event changed its name from “Symphony on the Green” to “Festival on the Green” (and, according to Ball State, is called “Picnic on the Green”), the event was in need of a clear identity that encompassed all the aspects of the evening’s activities and attracted the diverse community audience.

2010 Manufacturing and Logistics Report

Produced for Conexus Indiana, the 2010 Manufacturing and Logistics Report grades each of the 50 states in several areas of the economy that underlie the success of manufacturing and logistics.  This report always generates a lot of media attention because it calls out each state on its industrial climate.  The look is simple, fresh, and direct so a very diverse audience can understand the report.

Business Internships 2010

The duty of preparing students for major-specific internships and work experiences falls to the individual colleges and departments.  The goal is to 1.) prepare students so they excel in their internships and thus increase the reputation of the college and 2.) get students into internships early in their education so they can apply for increasingly better work opportunities during their upperclassmen years.

Valentine’s Day 2010

To celebrate my very first Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend, Kris, I wanted to do something sweet and special.  I decided to turn my apartment into a little restaurant and served a homemade meal.  I thought the results were too cute to keep to myself.

Carmina Burana 2010

For my father’s birthday, I wanted to buy tickets to a performance by the Muncie Symphony Orchestra.  Because tickets to the performance were not being sold until after his birthday, I made my own gift package that included fake tickets and a folded envelope that doubled as a teaser for the show.  I printed the items in-house on 60 lb. cover paper.  After trimming and folding, I had a nice, tangible gift for him instead of an IOU.

Scholarship Recognition Brunch 2009

Miller College Student Services holds an annual awards brunch to recognize high-achieving business students.  The event is one of the chances students have to network with important alumni and friends of the college.  The event materials are intended to be more upscale than the informal designs students see around campus and send the message, “Yes, we are celebrating and honoring you!”

Miller College Alumni Awards 2009

The Miller College of Business holds an annual dinner and awards program to honor outstanding alumni and friends of the college.  The event materials needed to reflect the classiness of the event.  The save-the-date postcard was my first chance to try out the look that I wanted for the year, which turned into a more refined 2-color look for the actual event pieces.  The invitation and program cover were printed on linen-texture cover stock at a professional printer.

Custom Chocolates for the Miller College

The Miller College of Business puts on several formal events each year (awards dinners, brunches, etc.) that require a special something (aka a souvenir) to express our gratitude for your attendance at the event.  When preparing for the annual student scholarship brunch, Student Services requested a special mold be made for custom chocolates that could be packaged in tiny boxes.  The best part was that the mold could be used year after year.  What a sweet idea!

I was concerned about fine lines and details being lost, especially on a bite-sized piece of chocolate.  Instead of using the college logo, I created a type-only graphic using the university’s accepted typefaces.  The black ink represents the depressed/inset areas of the final (delicious) product.
