Muncie MusicFest is an annual, all-ages event in the streets of downtown Muncie, Ind. The festival features local and regional acts on three outdoor stages and in several indoor venues. There is also a DJ/dance/electronica tent, a musicians’ merchandise area, and artistic activities scattered around.
Miller College Banner
After seeing the vertical column-style banners that CBER had made for its open house event in 2009, Miller College of Business expressed a wish to have similar banners for use at its various events, both within the Whitinger Business Building and at other locations on and off campus.
The column banners are made of cloth-backed vinyl that is durable enough to retract and wind into an aluminum base. The top of the banner is attached to an aluminum beam with a hole for a vertical spine to be inserted. Set up for the banners is surprisingly simple and takes just a few minutes.
CBER uses its two banners by doorways as signage and flanking the stage as decoration at events, as well as background decoration for the occasional TV interview. Applying our experiences, we knew that the most eye-catching elements needed to appear at shoulder height, both while standing and sitting next to the banner. We also knew that depending on who was doing the set up, the height of the banner could be a little unwieldy (33 in wide x 80 in high). Usually a couple sizes are available. I highly recommend these—look online for vendors who offer retractable, cloth-backed vinyl (possibly “oilcloth”) banners with metal frames. Good vendors should be willing to send you a swatch of the “fabric” before you place your final order.

Distinguished Speaker Tony Smith
The Miller College of Business Distinguished Speaker Series brings respected business people to campus to speak with students about the path to success. After making so many of these posters on short notice, I created a template so we could plug-and-chug the information and photos as soon as we received them. As a bonus, the poster has an easily identifiable look that students will recognize immediately as being part of the series. The oversized postcard was sent to deans of AACSB-accredited business schools across the nation.

The 2009 Indiana State Fair
In 2009, the Indiana State Fair board worked with Ball State University’s Center for Business and Economic Research to produce an economic impact report of the fair on the state economy. We also created a pocket-sized takeaway card featuring facts and findings from the report. The card was distributed to all the attendees at the fair and was available at the Ball State display in the agriculture building. The Department of Accounting also had plastic tote bags made for attendees to carry their various brochures and goods in. At the time, this was the most high profile group of projects that I worked on and had the largest distribution. I was very proud of the results—polished yet playful.

SHRM Brochure
The Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) is a national professional organization. Locally, SHRM offers certification courses in human resources management. The pre-existing brochure was out-of-date, unappealing, and visually cluttered. Working with a SHRM member, I cleaned up the information and polished the look.

Intramural Softball: Miller Moneymakers
Every summer, Ball State holds intramural softball games and a champion playoff for teams consisting of university students, employees, and/or Recreation Services cardholders. I designed a team logo for the Miller Moneymakers, which was then screen printed on t-shirts. The logo is easy to recognize from far away and has the right playful touch for an informal league.

Cultural Tourism in Indiana
This economic report was designed to attract the attention of audiences connected to the arts—both artists and art supporters. The look needed to be bright and dynamic while still serious enough to communicate the value of the subject to community leaders and policy makers. Photos were found through the Flickr Creative Commons.

Fortress of Brass
A few of my friends wanted a formal-yet-fun brochure to promote their tuba/euphonium ensemble. The brochures were printed 2-sided on a color copier using 28 lb. regular paper. Pretty snazzy!

Danthology Volume 2
When a friend wanted unique cover art for his latest music release, I was happy to oblige. Though he releases his albums through the internet, I designed the graphic with a CD jacket in mind.

Hearing in a Deaf World
The final project in News 485 (news packaging) was a multimedia news package produced by groups of 5-6 students from journalism (all disciplines) and telecommunications (news option). Our group decided to feature the Indiana School for the Deaf, which celebrated Deaf Awareness Month in April. We visited the school, interviewed teachers, students, and Ball State deaf education interns, and researched deaf communication.
I designed the project interface and created the interactive “Anatomy of a Conversation.” See Extras for the video story and Credits for a list of our sources and group members.
